SELF GUIDED OR NOT

Should you join a tour or do a self-guided tour?

Self-Guided Tour
Pros:
you can explore on you own term.
Each person can save hundreds.

Cons:
It's difficult to get around. You spend a lot of time looking for direction.
It's more physical demanding, meaning more walking to commute and find places.

Join A Tour
Pros:
Transportation and navigation are convenient.
You walk less.

Cons:
You have to follow the tour and can't explore freely.
Some tour guides make you go shopping when you just want to do sightseeing.
Hotel is usually located on the outskirts of central Paris (in the middle of nowhere or near the airport) and there is no place to go in the neighborhood at night.

If you work too hard all year around, you just want a relaxing vacation to decompress and don't have two weeks to research and coordinate you trip, you should join a tour. The truth is when you do a self-guided tour, you spend a considerable amount of time figuring out how to get around and looking for places, so it's not like you use all your time to explore the city. Paris is like a maze, it's not easy for first-timers to find the streets. If you want a hassle-free trip, it's better you join a tour organized by a reputable travel agency.

Self-guided tour allows you to explore freely and save some money. Keep in mind that you will not save a bundle because you have to pay for admissions at full rate, transportation, and all your meals.  Compare to self-guided tour, many tours are very good at getting group rates for everything. They usually cover admissions, transportation, and most of the meals. If you want to join a tour, find out exactly what are covered, so you can choose one with a good value from different tour packages .
